Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Overall this is an enjoyable, relatively long walk through countryside and villages from Narborough to Kibworth but there is one dangerous section alongside a busy road.
The start follows well-trodden footpaths and pavements through Littlethorpe, under the M1 and on to Whetstone, and Countesthorpe. Once the sound of the M1 dissapates the walk is delightful and the country park outside Countesthorpe is especially lovely. The route crosses Blaby golf course, but it would have been easier (and not much longer) to just keep following the initial footpath and skirt round the golf course instead. Now for why I only rated this walk 3/5. I would have rated it higher but for a 500m section at Foston, which follows a narrow verge alongside a busy winding road. The verge was overgrown when I walked it (August) and I felt unsafe on the road (see photo). The footpath that comes off this road had a field boundary ditch that I fell in (it was overgrown so could not be seen). I think there should have been a small footbridge but this was missing. Futher on, past Kilby the footpaths were less overgrown and clearly better used. There are some great views from here over to Leicester and Bradgate Park beyond. Access wise, there are quite a few stiles on this route, some of which were broken so the route would not be for everyone. If I had brought my dog I would have had to carry him over quite a few stiles. I stopped at a lovely cafe in Fleckney (the Toast Office) and then there was a nice walk into Kibworth, which has a great bookshop and tea room.

All in all, a good walk that was let down by a short walk alongside a busy road.
