Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

  1. Complete the survey training.

11 Nov 2023 (edited 11 Dec 2023) Autumn

November 2023. Direction: Blaenavon to Nantyglo.

This would be 5-star route is spoiled by the stretch just outside the Big Pit museum. The terrain is an absolute bog. The right of way cuts diagonally across the land outside of the Big Pit enclosure, but there is no footpath and the water can be fairly deep in places. The watery sections are also often hidden from sight by the large tussocks of grass (which you need to use to avoid going knee deep in water). This walk was on a lovely sunny day, but after a few days of rain, but I have walked this section before (in pre-SlowWays days), during the summer months and it was the same then. The answer is simple - to take the section of the route used in Blabla1 (Blaina to Blaenavon). This is much easier, although there are still some boggy areas in wet conditions, but nothing like the route drawn up. I have drawn up another route, Nantbla2 to avoid this and the minor point below.

The route into Blaenavon is not very well drawn and there is an access issue on the edge of Forgeside. The route is not clear, but it looks like it indicates a path through some land that is barred, but there is a path through the backs of Forgeside, which takes you through the rugby field and then out onto a track into Blaenavon, but just a minor diversion. This minor access issue would also be redundant with the alternative route.

There is also an access issue near Blaen yr Ystruth farm. The stream / marsh at the bottom of the field just under the farm is quite deep in places and you need to use the clumps of grass as stepping "stones" to get across. Some boards have been laid down in one spot to help the crossing, but it`s not an easy path. Also, leaving the open moor, to enter the fields heading towards Blaen yr Ystruth, the gate is tied, so a little gate jumping is needed here.
