Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I walked this route from Holytown to Motherwell. Starting from Holytown train station it was a quick walk through New Stevenston until turning into Riccard Johnston park. The paths in the park were good and then the route became a bit more stoney underfoot & going downhill I was glad to have some sturdy shoes on. After crossing the South Calder Water the route joins the Greenlink which was a good path and takes you right to Motherwell town centre and the train station. I walked this on a sunny Friday afternoon and didn’t come across another person from the park to the end of green link section so it was very quiet but I thought that was a lovely walk.

Review of SlowWays Route Mothol one (Motherwell to Holytown)
I walked this route in reverse (Holytown to Motherwell). For me, the route began at Holytown Station, crossing the railway line via a pedestrian bridge (with interesting iron railings) to enter New Stevenston. Jerviston Road is followed until the route enters Riccard Johnston Park. This is an interesting park but quite remote and not lit, so it may not suit all travellers. Indeed the following kilometre or so of the route is equally remote as it follows a heavily wooded track around the edge of Colville Park Golf Course and descends to a footbridge over the South Calder Water. The surface underfoot is variable with some tarmacked sections but some consisting of very rough hardcore. The route uphill from the river crossing is on a much better surface and the quality continues to improve as it becomes the Motherwell Green Link. This excellent footpath can be followed all the way to the centre of Motherwell and the end of the route at Motherwell Train Station. All in all, an interesting and practical route, although there are those remote and rough sections to contend with. I would be happy to recommend the route but I acknowledge that it may not be to everyone’s liking.
