04 May 2021I have dropped a star for this route only because it is unsuitable for bikes or wheelchairs. It will take you through an area of beautiful scenery in the Wye Valley but is less than 10km long. Going east to west (Coleford to Monmouth) you will have just 500m of urban walking before passing out of Coleford towards Newland through pastoral countryside. The next section to Redbrook is more arable but latterly a section of bluebell woodland. Do not dally in crossing the road at Redbrook (narrow and on a bend in the road), but the next section of path could be classed as difficult before passing Jamie's Farm on the right (look them up online!) and heading upwards and eventually into more bluebell woodland on the way down to Monmouth. The last 2.5km into Monmouth is urban but there is compensation in the form of the River Wye and the town's lovely high street (currently being made much more pedestrian friendly).
The GPX file and elevations given by Slow Ways are from east to west, starting in Coleford, which is 500ft higher than Monmouth. The route is probably the most direct and safest between the towns, although multiple longer variations are possible. I would recommend walking in that direction to finish in Monmouth
In conclusion, this walk is a beautiful countryside ramble with great variety. An excellent introduction to the Wye Valley, usable for any reasonably fit walker who can cope with stiles and inclines.
