Description
This route was inspired by Dan Raven-Ellison's comment in his review of MidLee one, which suggested that a better route might be possible via Cross Flatts Park. I walked it today and it works, though there are a lot of paths and cycle trails in Middleton Park so that part demands careful navigation. Leeds station is currently undergoing development work and the main entrance is closed, but this does not affect the SlowWays meeting point

31 Aug 2024 (edited 01 Sep 2024)I walked this route from Middleton to Leeds before submitting it, and although I have not walked MidLee one, I suspect that this route is more enjoyable. Expect a lot of stones, tree roots, mud when wet and other minor impediments, but the southern two thirds are surprisingly green for an urban route.
From the Middleton meeting point, we head north, cross into Middleton Park and take the old carriage road left. Beyond the Rose Garden there is a wide choice of routes - I chose the one which looked most direct on the map which descends fairly steeply and crosses a BMX track, which makes the old railway a little tricky to locate, but there may well be slightly easier ways down, one of which has steps. The old railway track has a rough stony surface that does not deter cyclists. Eventually we reach a path junction near the edge of the equestrian centre, and here we turn left. There is a wide choice of paths here, if in doubt take the one nearest the fence and you will easily reach the path which follows the southern edge of the industrial estate, where we turn right. Our route turns left to follow a green strip through the industrial estate, which is surprisingly pleasant, but there was one place where a detour through the undergrowth was needed to avoid a fallen branch.
At Middleton Grove we turn left on a good pavement. There is a pelican crossing just left of the junction on Dewsbury Road, and we head straight on into Cross Flatts Park, a large recreation ground. We take the surfaced paths nearest the right hand edge throughout to emerge on Beeston Road. There are paths through the cemetery to the left, but it is easier just to use Temple Crescent to reach Cemetery Road. Do not cross here - the path lower down over the M621 starts from the left/west pavement and descends left beyond the bridge to an underpass which takes us through to the parkland on the right.
A wide surfaced track takes us to Holbeck Moor Road, which has a convenient zebra crossing. We then head left, almost immediately right then left again to find a railway bridge (no steps). We head through more industrial buildings on good pavements and signposted paths to reach Water Lane, where we take the shortcut path to the canal bridge and Granary Wharf, where we turn right, using the popular bridge over the Aire. There are a few steps at the far end of this bridge which can be avoided by a ramped zigzag. We then follow Neville Street left under the station and continue along Bishopgate Street to reach the City Square meeting point - there are pelican crossings at every junction here.
