03 Jun 2023 (edited 04 Sep 2023)(Original Review 4/6/23:)
Started walking this one from Melbourne to Kegworth, but was forced to abandon because the FP20 path through the west end of Donington Park was closed and partly fenced off due to preparations for the download festival. This is likely to happen every year from late May to mid June, so I thought it was worth adding a quick review to warn of the possible problem. There were posters up at the start of the path, which I chose to ignore, but I gave up and retreated because I reached a point where it was not possible to continue without crossing the high metal fences.
The road walk at the Melbourne end is not too dangerous (mostly in a 40 mph zone) but is not pleasant, as the pavement stops at the old station (the Cloud Trail). The small part of FP20 that I was able to check looked neglected and little walked.
(Update 2/9/23:)
I walked the whole route from Kegworth to Melbourne today. A mixed bag but no show stoppers.
The field path out of Kegworth is normally good but had recently been ploughed and not yet fully restored. The path along the north side of East Midlands Airport gets the job done quickly enough but since it is sandwiched between the runways and a series of massive warehouses, it is not very inspiring. Most of it is unsurfaced but fairly dry and compacted, which makes me doubt that MELKEG2 is really suitable for mobility scooters other than very rugged ones.
The old permissive path line that took a shortcut through the grounds of the final (westernmost) warehouse is no longer possible because of the fences and the steep banks, but in any case it is better to stay higher up on the paths. It is also possible to stay north of the little wood as far as the lane, and enjoy better views northwards towards the Peak District.
No problems with the path to Castle Donington or the road walk through it, though apart from a Spar just off route I didn't spot any facilities. The path line out is unaffected by the recent housing development. Dalby's Covert is a little confusing, as the best trodden paths are those that stray furthest from the right of way line, but it is easy enough to find a way up the hill.
Beyond, Donington Park seems very full of metal fencing, and the narrow path around the high perimeter fence of the race track is overgrown, little used, a little muddy at times and not very pretty. There are no serious obstacles, and eventually Melbourne Road is reached easily enough. A little slightly unpleasant road walking (mostly in a 40 mph zone but limited verge space) takes us to the old station, beyond which a simple pavement walk takes us to the meeting point.
