Description

Adjustments to Marpnew one (7.9 kilometers · +200 m / -145 m):
Left out of Marple Rail Station down Station Road (pavement)
Cross pedestrian crossing right into Town Street, Marple Bridge (pavement, shops, pubs)
First right onto Low Lea Road (no pavement soon unsealed road)
At Oldknow's Mill archaeological site keep left onto Lakes Road (unsealed, potholes)
Route continues as Marpnew one with two exceptions:
1. Short cut after Hague Bar on New Mills FP93 to avoid Waterside Road
2. Short detour through park onto Station Road, New Mills.
(NB Lakes Road is also accessible from Marple, Faywood Drive - not as attractive as Marple Bridge above)

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

(Continued from previous review photos)
After descending to Hague Bar cross the main road onto Waterside Road and soon left into The Torrs Riverside Park. Photo 1.
The signed footpath leading from the far side of the playground (middle left in photo 1) is poorly used and has a barrier (Photo 2)
New Mills FP 93 is the unsigned first path on the right after entering the car park. It is signed at the far end (photo 3 looking back from the riverside path).
Alternatively, for mobility scooter access continue on Waterside Road to just before the bridge (Photo 4) for direct access to the riverside path to New Mills.

Route as Marpnew 1 but starts by descending to Marple Bridge (pavement), crossing the pedestrian crossing, along Town Street (shops, pubs) and taking Low Lea Rd (photo 1, short cobble then unsealed). Joins Lakes Road, Marpnew 1, at Oldknow's Mill (photo 2), passes Roman Lakes (photo 3, refreshments in normal times, wide, unsealed road with potholes), under Marple viaduct (photo 4, road narrows, fewer potholes), alongside River Goyt (photo 5, road narrows, becomes sealed, new, permeable path with short stretch of concrete where river floods in rare, extreme, prolonged rain), under railway (short, straight, tunnel), bollard after farm (photo 6), path becomes unsealed, stony with a barrier to cars (photo 7), here right on unsealed road. At Station Rd left past Strines Station (cobbles) onto Restricted Byway (photo 8) and rocky climb to Brook Bottom (can be avoided turning left after station, short stretch stony road then 2 strips of tarmac, better views) to Fox Inn, Brook Bottom (open 1200-2100 Fri, Sat, Sun). Continue on Brook Bottom Rd (tarmac) soon right onto Hague Fold (stony bridleway) (alternative remain on Brook Bottom Rd into New Mills) becomes Hague Fold Rd (tarmac). Over B6102 onto Waterside Rd (tarmac) soon left into car park and New Mills FP 93 (unsealed) into Mousley Park and the Goyt Way (unsealed, becomes Station Rd, New Mills).

This is the first half of the path. Slightly longer, pleasant alternatives possible if using a mobility scooter, to avoid steep, rocky climb to Brook Bottom and narrow path to Hague Bar. Second half photos follow.
