Description

From the starting point in Meltham, cross Holmfirth Road, turn R, then L into Greenfield Road before the church, follow this round to Mill Moor road. Turn L and walk up Mill Moor Road until it crosses New Bridge Road and becomes unmetalled. It is now Brow Grains Road. Follow this up and through a gate. Bear R along an obvious path, cross Muddy Brook by large stepping stones, continue straight on up the track past the pumping station on the left. Turn R at the T junction and continue downhill. Turn L through a gate immediately before a gate across the track. Follow the track uphill and go through a gate onto Deer Hill Road. Turn L then after a few metres, turn R and follow a track across 2 fields to a stepped stile over a wall. A water treatment works is immediately ahead, bear L along a path by the fencing, with Deer Hill Reservoir embankment ahead. Continue in the same line as the path and straight up the embankment. Turn R and follow the embankment road around to the shooting club. Pass this on the left and through a gate onto National Trust land. You are now walking along Deer Hill conduit. Pass through 2 gates in short succession marking National Trust boundaries. Shortly after the second, bear R on an obvious path downhill towards a house. Pass through a gate and onto the house driveway. Continuing downhill and bear R downhill leaving farm buildings to the R, then round a house in front and down a path to meet Binn Lane through a gate. Turn R. Wessenden Road joins from the L, continue walking downhill on Binn Road, past houses then mills on the L. At a roundabout go straight ahead onto Fall Lane, under the A62, Manchester Road. Continue to the T junction of Town Gate and Church Lane. Bear R with the church to your L. Cross the River Colne to meet the T junction of Station Road. Turn L and walk uphill to see the Railway station in front of you

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Did this one today and really enjoyed it. I already knew the lie of the land and have done some parts of this route at various times, but there were also parts I'd never walked before, which was nice. The weather was good whilst I was on the route, and I enjoyed some great vistas. This is a pretty easy walk, along some roads and well established tracks and a couple of narrow paths. A little muddy in parts but not boggy. I was surprised at how long it took to do the first part, from Meltham centre to Deer Hill reservoir, which made up over half the entire route. The shlep from the centre, up Mill Moor road seemed to go on forever. After that it opens up into moorland, heading up to Deer Hill res. At the res there is a choice of walking the more sheltered path below the res, or climbing the steps to walk directly around it. Personally Deer Hill is not my favourite reservoir. Its invariably cold and windy, and as resevoirs go, its pretty boring. But after circumnavigating it and bypassing the rifle range, where shooting was in full swing today, the route gets prettier and more interesting. The track continues to be reasonably well surfaced and easy going, and benefits from good views over Marsden, well before you get tom it, until Binn lane, which goes all the way down into Marsden where there is a choice of train or bus, depending on where you need to get back to. I called in at the Riverhead Tap (excellent and huge choice of hand-pulled ales) for a half and a bag of crisps. But unfortunately just missed the train to Slaithwaite where I intended to get the bus back to Meltham. So I walked the Slow Way via the canal path to Slaithwaite.
Its a good route. Easy, safe and without any issues. It is also very accurate. I would definitely walk this one again and would recommend it. I would have given it 5 stars if it weren't for the long drag up Mill Moor Lane. But to be honest, I cant think of a better alternative.

This is the basis of a very fine walking and off road cycling route. I walk it every couple of weeks. I’d suggest keeping to the road up to Deerhill Res - better surface and views. And I’d recommend staying on the catch water path until Upper Acre Head where there is a gate and Good access to a quiet road down to or up from Marsden. Better surface and easy route finding. Pretty much fully rideable if off road too. Plenty of link roads and paths to use too. If you stick to the road by the Res and the track by Upper Acre Head there are gates but no stiles if that is a factor.

See you up there!.
