This is essentially the same route as MarMel two, but plotted with much greater attention to detail. I could have shortened the route at the Meltham end and cut out a slightly awkward path above Marsden, but opted to retain the original route so that its reviews remain valid

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

12 Jun 2025 Spring

Walked from Marsden to Meltham. This is the route I actually used while trying to follow MarMel two. Most of it is on good paths, pavements and quiet roads, but note that the path up the hill from Binn Lane is narrow and may be overgrown, the path further up the hill is steep and a little rough underfoot, and the descent from the corner of Deer Hill Dam is a little steep (but has easier and slightly longer alternatives). So it is unsuitable for any form of wheels.

From Marsden station we head downhill. Don't miss the right turn over the bridge into Church Lane. More pavements take us south, and Binn Road has sections with no pavement and is quiet. The left turn could easily be missed, but the path, though narrow and overgrown in places, is very easy to follow. Alternatively you could stay on the lane and join the path above the houses. The upper part of the path is a little rough, but you are soon on the surfaced road that leads to a farmhouse and the access to the higher moor.

The walk alongside the Deer Hill Conduit (Catchwater Drain) is easy, on a good track that leads us round to the Deer Hill Reservoir, which has dams on three of its four sides, the fourth being inside the rifle range. Here there are a few choices - mine was to stay on the dam then descend the eastern corner of the dam to find the path to the right of the locked gate, which crosses a high stone wall using steps built into the masonry. We follow good paths down the hill, then go uphill left for a short distance and follow the track down to Meltham Dike, which is crossed on high solid stepping stones with a fence that can be used as a handhold (picture 13). A path which may be muddy in places leads round to Brow Grains Road (initially a compacted gravel lane) which becomes a surfaced road which leads us easily down to the centre of Meltham.
