Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

05 May 2024An enjoyable ramble between the two settlements. I walked this on a warm Saturday on the May Day bank holiday weekend - travelling from Tiptree to Maldon. It’s a mixture of pavement walking, footpaths over fields and through woodland, a short traipse across a golf course, private tracks and a small amount of road walking on quiet lanes. I’ve marked it down for some loose route alignment in the mapping (easily mitigated by map use) and for the section of pavement through Maldon which runs alongside a busy road and is rather tedious (I’m perhaps being unfair here as there’s not currently a good alternative - but it’s an aspiration for future improvement). The main section includes no shops or eateries, so stock up.
A short stretch of pavement through Tilbury down Church Road, Station Road and Hall Road quickly gets you to the edge of town (there’s a slight shortcut if you take Surrey Land off Station Road). The route south goes past Wilkins’s strawberry polytunnels, out across fields and through a thicket. Out the other side, there’s some road walking but only one car passed me on this stretch.
At Theedoms on Grove Farm Road the route goes back across fields (Theedoms had noisy, agitated, but fenced-in dogs). A wiggle of quiet lanes and footpaths takes you on towards Great Totham. If you need refreshment a diversion here into Great Totham to The Compasses pub is probably your best bet.
Going through Totham Hill a footpath carries on, into and across Forrester Park golf club leaving by the stage works. The way across the golf club is simple enough but easy to miss, look out for chip shots up the green.
Some more pleasant field walking, quiet lanes and private track eventually deliver you to the B1022. You’ll need to cross the road but there’s now pavement from Broad Street Green, into Heybridge and onto Maldon. This is safe but dull. It takes you past many supermarkets. The final stretch to the route end involves a steep hike up Maldon’s Market Hill. I suggest that you take the west pavement up Market Hill, break off up Cromwell Hill and visit either The Carpenters Arms or The Blue Boar.
