02 Jun 2026This is a very enjoyable route with lots of wide views and a chance to visit the famous Cerne Abbas Giant along the way (it was being rechalked by volunteers on the day I passed through). I walked from Piddletrenthide to Maiden Newton but reckon that you probably get the very best of the views going in the other direction. The Slow Way heads over three hills, passing two villages in the valleys between, both of which have pubs. Lots of walking on stony or grassy tracks (I met a beautiful slow worm crossing one of them), with a few paths through fields and nearly a mile of road without a pavement east of Cerne Abbas that has some local traffic but felt safe enough. The only place I couldn’t see an obvious pathway was heading through a big grassy field in a valley with some big oak trees in Cerne Park. The ongoing route is clear going from west to east but if you are heading the other way just make sure you bear to the right a bit. Also the short path across the arable field going east of the transmitter tower Buckland Hill looks to be regularly obliterated by cultivation but is then remade by walkers (the developing path through a growing wheat crop in May is pictured). Otherwise navigation was pretty straightforward. I didn’t meet any livestock the day I walked but you may well encounter sheep and possibly cattle, although the only ones I saw were confined behind an electric fence. Access mostly through (good) gates with one or two stiles.
Maiden Newton is on the railway line between Weymouth and Westbury. I couldn’t see any sign of public transport at Piddletrenthide.
