Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Agree with the previous reviewer: the route from Maghull to the canal isn't detailed enough, and it is much better to stay on the canal until Lydiate rather than come off early and start a road walk. I've adjusted this for an alternative route.

The rest of the route is very pleasant: some road walking (with the odd short stint on unpaved sections, although on quiet residential rural roads with barely any traffic); lots of lovely footpaths through fields and woods; and a good final approach into Ormskirk using well-paved roads.

The terrain, as well as some steps, gates and footbridges, do make this a foot-only route, but a good one it is, with great views over the West Lancs and Sefton. Shops and transport at each end, and the odd shop and pub along the way.

The map is misleading shortly after the start. There is a footpath alongside Westway that leads to the canal (photo 1).

It is far nicer to stay on the canal until bridge number 17. Climb the steps and cross the bridge (photo 2) and walk the short distance to the Weld Blundell pub (photo3).

The footpath that starts in Sandy Lane actually finishes in Pygons Hill Lane where you have to turn right (not left!) to get to Sudell Lane.

The Waggoners ‘pub’ is now actually a private house (photo 4).

All in all, a very pleasant, highly-recommended walk!.
