Strider
21 Mar 2025I walked from Kirkby to Maghull on an overcast warm day.
From Kirkby bus station along busy road to Kirkby train station, over a bridge and behind the station, then along suburban roads until the canal. Down a short slope to the path which you follow almost all the way to Maghull, easy navigation. A wiggle past a health centre takes you to shops and cafes in Maghull.
A pleasant walk, the path is a little uneven in places but okay for wheels. Would love to see one of the swing bridges in action.

11 Dec 2024From the shops in Maghull it was only a short distance to reach the towpath of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, via a swingbridge. Shortly before going under the railway bridge there was a footbridge over the canal which gives access to Maghull Station. Soon after this was the M58 bridge, so there was a fair bit of traffic noise in that area.
The next section of canal (middle third of the route) was pleasantly rural, with lots of coots and moorhens. The exit from the canal was via a ramp (10⁰ slope), and the route soon passed bus stops, a pub, and some shops. There was a footbridge over the railway at Kirkby, before a trek down a fairly busy road (but with safe crossing points) to Kirkby bus station and shopping centre.
This was generally a pleasant and easy walk, but the Kirkby end was a bit tedious.

Hiking Historian
13 May 2022An enjoyable walk, mostly along tarmac towpaths and well-paved roads. This route is fully accessible to all users, with no steps and ramps on kerbs. Good shops and bus transport links at either end (rail stations are nearby).
Through rural and residential areas, this is a lovely walk between the two towns.
