Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

17 Sep 2024I walked this on a warm Autumn morning, from Stevenage to Luton. It hadn't really rained in the previous week.
After going around some of Stevenage's facilities (photo #1) you cross underneath the A1(M) and you soon find yourself alongside fields (photo #2). Some of the paths are a little overgrown (photo #3), but it's soon wide open views (photo #4). Crossing London Road (B656) needs a little care (photo #5), but it is only a short stretch alongside it.
Then it is more arable land. Near East Hall, there is a short section along a quiet road (photo #6), until the pub at St Paul's Walden. Once you go past the church, you follow the Chiltern Way Extension for a significant distance. It's good paths, although sometimes in between barbed wire fences (photo #7). Whitwell is quite pretty, although on the west side, along Horn Hill, it's along a road. But it has an interesting tower (photo #8).
Then more good paths follow (photo #9, #10), with the planes into Luton getting lower and lower. It's mostly along the edges of fields (photo #11). After Breachwood, more paths alongside (and sometimes across) fields with crops gets you to Wigmore, on the outskirts of Luton. A section on a verge (photo #12), followed by a long section along a road with "great views" of a parking lot (photo #13), gets you into Luton proper. The section through the graveyard (photo #14) is the last bit of green before finishing at the interchange.
The route is fairly hilly, but that also creates good views. I really enjoyed it - maybe a little too many residential roads near Luton though.
