Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

The route takes you though some beautiful places. The section from Lostwithiel to Lerryn was already familiar to me and takes down the steep bridleway from Newham Farm and across fields and woodland to. the lovely riverside hamlet of St Winnow. To get to Lerryn it’s a steep uphill first followed by a series of fields and then into Ethy Woods (past St Winnow Mill) and down to the Lerryn River. At low tide there are stepping stones but on this occasion we needed to use the bridge.

From Lerryn the route progressed through some lovely woodland with stepping stones over some mud. Things became a bit sketchy once we reached the fields and we were directed straight though a potato field with no obvious path. Didn’t really feel comfortable going through the crops so we went round the edge of the next field which took us off route a little. We also found a short cut through the middle of the solar farm rather than going around but we ended up back on track. There was then quite a bit of walking along the lanes to get to Lanreath.

From Lanreath it was back through the fields. It was tough going as it was obvious no one has walked this way for a while - felt like we were bushwhacking at one point! The stiles were overgrown with brambles and nettles. We turned on to a lane but this seemed to lead us through a complex of holiday cottages and there was no obvious route so we walked along the roads to Pelynt via the B3359 ( so we completely missed the route)

The last section from Pelynt to Looe was a joy. We went though gorgeous woodland and skirted the West Looe river estuary where we saw a kingfisher as well as little Egrets. The final stretch took us through Kilminorth woods and into the Millpool car park at Looe.

Although we lost the route a couple of times we did make it to our destination and traveled through some wonderful scenery. There are a lot of stiles on the route and we climbed over 2,000 feet. Given we travelled 16.5 miles you need a bit of stamina for this one!.
