10 Aug 2023 (edited 11 Aug 2023)Walked from Grantham to Long Bennington on a hot summer morning. Most of the royte good, but the fields around Allington Meadows had no cut path and were hard work, and there is no obvious alternative route available. The views over the edge of the hill from Barrowby justify the long and rather tedious pavement walk from Grantham. There are pubs en route at Barrowby and Allington.
From Grantham, we follow the station access road out to the roundabout (the left hand pavement stops at the pedestrian tunnel but there is a zebra crossing here. The pavement beyond the roundabout is narrow due to trees that need pruning, so take care as the road is busy. We turn left under the railway and follow the pavement out of the town and round the corner into Barrowby, quite a pretty village. Beyond the church there is an escarpment with fine views over the east Notts/ west Lincs plains. We descend field edges (fairly steeply) - there are waymarks at all the field boundaries, then follow a farm lane right to the A52, using the field path parallel to the main road up to an obvious gap opposite a junction.
Cross with care and continue up the quiet road ahead, which crosses the railway at a level crossing then turns right. Here we go straight on on a well cut field path, then follow the bridleway left. According to the map there is a gap between the end of the bridleway and the start of the footpath beyond, but there are waymarks covering this gap. There are a few stiles. Just before Allington Meadows the path gets more challenging - first we cross a fallow field with high grass and thistles on a path that is just about visible, but beyond this field we cross a corn field in which there was no obvious cut path. The right of way line is no longer correct - the path does not enter the static caravan park. Beyond the caravans the path improves, and we follow lanes through Allington, then turn right into the rather charming Cowlady Lane and follow the field edge on a wide well cut strip to the Drift (Sewstern Lane) where we turn right.
From here the route into Long Bennington is obvious, but take care at the A1 junction where there is no pavement (the roads are wide and not too busy).
