Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

We parked by the Quay in Beccles and caught the X22 bus to Loddon. Once out of Loddon (after waiting to cross the busy A146) the walk heads in to a sort of low valley, heading up to Hales green via the impressive 14th Century Hales hall. As others have said, the section from Walsh lane to Bungay road wasn't clearly a footpath, so you might want to carry on up the road and take the left onto honeypot lane instead. Then it's over another busy road (A143 this time), the Geldestone.

The Locks Inn community pub just outside Geldestone was open when we walked past, and would make a nice half way mark stop for food and refreshments, but we carried on straight into Beccles for an ice cream by the Quay.

Walking is mostly gravel tracks and farm lanes, some were a little muddy and wet, but I was fine in trainers. A few kissing gates and bridges, but no stiles.

This was a really nice route between two nice old towns with plenty of facilities and charm. Some stretches seem likely to get overgrown as it was a case of duck and dive and avoid thorns in late March as we've walked it. There is a stretch off wash lane that I don't think is general access and passes through some copses obviously used for hunting. Id probably stick to wash lane a little longer and pick up the same route past the church Kirby Cane and take the left on honeypot lane. There were a few faster vehicles on wash lane as the previous reviewer noted but there are wider verges and it didn't feel too bad as people gave a wide berth. Mix of path types although note that at the same area in Kirby the path clearly states no bicycles and only walkers. Easy walking overall and passes a few pubs on the way. Some really nice paths with spring flowers out.

Very little road walking on this route. A lovely footpath out of Loddon and alongside the Warren Hills. Wash Lane was a little busy and the first farm track off it was gated but the second wasn’t. No right of way on this farm track. Lovely stretch to cross the river Waveney at Geldeston Lock (pub was open) and then to join Angles Way. Some very feisty bullocks in one field.
