Mary Oz

29 Nov 2023 Autumn

It was a busy but safe start at Garston (Liverpool South Parkway Station) but then a mixture of quieter roads and main road until I reached the edge of the River Mersey, when the sun started to break through the clouds. There were waders close to the shore and in the distance, looking south east, I could see planes landing, and beyond the oil refinery I could see Beeston and Peckforton Hills.
The bulk of the walk was along a well-surfaced promenade, with views that made me keep stopping to take photos. At Otterspool, there was a kids play area with a café (and toilets including disabled), there was a pub, and there were parakeets! There were also several railway stations not far inland dotted along the route.
It was interesting for me to pass the site of the Garden Festival which I remember visiting about 40 years ago.
The sky across the Mersey looked beautiful, as the sun got lower.
There were a lot of industrial premises in the area near Brunswick station, and the promenade was often fenced off from these, so it was fully enclosed for some sections.
I didn’t get my first view of the buildings of central Liverpool until reaching the first sea lock into the docks, where everything became more interesting inland, and I was less focussed on the view across to the Wirral and North Wales.
Soon after the Exhibition Centre I headed inland past Albert Dock with views of lots of Liverpool’s iconic buildings, and on through the bustle of the city centre to Lime Street Station.
A mostly gorgeous route!.

25 Jun 2023 (edited 29 Jun 2023) Summer

I walked from Garston to Liverpool.
Starting at Liverpool South parkway Station there is some walking beside busy roads, not for long and the pavements are wide. Soon into suburban roads with walls made of Triassic red sandstone, so characteristic of Liverpool buildings. A narrow pavement along a very quiet road, walk or wheel on the road, brings you to the side of the Mersey. Walking along the estuary edge is the majority of this walk, easy to navigate, with many parks, and a pub/café halfway. Its is paved and has no steps although there are some short ramps and cobbles, but as this is a cycle path it is suitable for all wheels. 100% paved, but there are flat grassed verges for tired feet. I'm glad I walked NW with the wind and sun on my back, not in my face, there are lots of benches along the way but shade and shelter is sparse.
Approaching Liverpool, parks give way to buildings, monuments and paved squares. Turn through Albert dock there are ice cream vans and tourist attractions, lots to see and do. A bit further on you pass close to the shopping centre, Liverpool One. I ate at 'The Vibe' (recommended) before walking on to Lime Street Station.
A lovely walk with views across the Mersey and lots of interesting distractions along the way.

04 Aug 2022 Summer

I walked this route from Garston to Liverpool. Aside from a very brief stretch along St Mary's Road (which has generous pavements) and a short segment along quiet residential streets and a short bit through the vibrant Liverpool city centre, the route is entirely along the Mersey. The non-Mersey segments are safe, comfortable, and direct; the Mersey segment is wide, flat, paved, direct, accessible, safe, off-road, and gorgeous. The transport links on both sides are fantastic. The Mersey is gorgeous. The route is perfectly plotted for easy navigation AKA: This is an almost perfect Slow Ways route! Full marks.

An amalgam of the first two walks, amended for accuracy and access.

A good walk between the two locations. A nice short wander through the city centre, before getting on the riverside promenade at the Albert Dock. Mostly well-paved, with only a very short section near the Asian restaurant having cobbles and a makeshift ramp, but easily negotiable.

Popular route along the river, especially around Otterspool (where there's also a good café). Nice peaceful section through Grassendale as we move away from the river, before making our way along residential roads towards South Parkway.

Good transport links at either end, with shops, and the odd place for refreshments along the way.

Note: ignore odd road crossing at St Mary's Road, not sure what happened there!.
