Description

A new version which fits geographically and conceptually between the earlier two routes. It is broadly similar to LivCan 2, longer by 700m and so 1.8km shorter than LivCan 1. I had planned to review LivCan 2 but, on my journey there, I realised it was snailed two days earlier. This was in my back pocket (from before David S pipped me by uploading LivCan 2) so I just made a few adjustments, per the reviews, plus a few more along the way. Hopefully this compromise will satisfy others too.

Unique to this route are: lanes and quieter roads south of Aldgate; two green spaces with benches (a Hawksmoor churchyard and an unlikely woodland); dockside pathways (Tobacco Dock and Shadwell Basin); a historic pub filling the midway gap (Prospect of Whitby, look it up), plus two twiddly (but easily ignored) Thames-view detours near Limehouse Basin. Once in ‘Docklands’ proper the route includes both a public toilet and an abundance of public art. Add even more with a detour onto the pontoon over Middle Dock but it does closes at dusk. (My review has a bit more detail about the non unique sections.)

The line of this route was definitely open to the public 24/7 in December 2024. But public access to the Thames (i.e. the Thames Path) seems quite changeable, fingerposts were contradicted by padlocks and neither maps nor LivCan 1 or 2 were truly reliable. The small King Edward Memorial Park diversion isn't shown though. Signs were very clear and the infrastructure work is (now) due to end in summer 2025 by when the way through may be changed again and possibly some foreshore path reopened, who knows.

There are plenty of transport links (DLR, Windrush Overground, buses and river ferries) plus many small shops and places to eat

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.
