Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

03 Dec 2024I walked this route from Canary Wharf to Liverpool Street
Canary Wharf appears clean and organised with its busy office workers and smart apartments.
Out of the station I took the right hand loop around the water basin, as it seemed to have more cafés and restaurants. It mirrored the official Slowways route which was soon joined.
Once you leave the office area you walk by the river. With the sun shining, on a winters afternoon, walking by the Thames was a great feeling. It doesn’t get better than that.
What follows are several sections close to the river and then walking on streets behind it. Some interesting architecture along the way; and plenty of runners trying to get fit.
After a busy section of the Commercial Road, you divert into King Edward Memorial Park. It is a timely escape from the traffic.
I was not able to strictly follow the route in the King Edward Memorial Park because the section of the footpath was closed off for repair , but there’s an easy detour and you can still see down to the river and get decent views.
After that it is a mix of busy or quiet streets until you hit the business district of the City of London; and all too soon you arrive at Liverpool Street Station.

03 Dec 2024Started in Canary Wharf, leaving the Jubilee Line station behind to walk down to the Thames Clipper station.
Canary Wharf is always imposing and the view down the river to the City of London is equally wonderful.
You turn off the river past the entrance to Ropemakers Park, to walk past some of the old Docklands buildings. These include The Grapes pub which dates to 1583, and was once memorably described by Charles Dickens.
Over an old swing beach with a Gordon Ramsay restaurant enjoying sweeping riverside views, you turn into King Edward Memorial Park back down by the river. There are lots of young joggers and dog walkers. In the park is one of the entrances to the first tunnel under the Thames, or indeed any navigable river, built by Mark Brunel in the mid-1800s.
You cut across Commercial Road and into Cable Street, with the DLR running high beside you. I detoured slightly off the route to see the historic Wilton’s Music Hall.
You turn right under a railway bridge into Leman street. Some magnificent buildings here remind you of the wealth created in this area of London when its maritime trade was at its height.
A few more twists and turns lead you into Liverpool Street station.
Good walk with the potential to add a few diversions of your to explore some historic areas of London.

23 Jan 2023A really enjoyable walk starting across the City of London, going down historic Cable Street and following the Thames Path (where it can) to Canary Wharf. Safe, varied, direct and avoids the busiest roads for the most part. Numerous stops and shops throughout. Multiple links to bus routes, including Aldgate Bus Station, tube stations and DLR.
