Description
This is an amended version of LewAlf 2 which was not possible to follow, most particularly in Lewes.
From Lewes the route takes one of the less steep climbs, around the Golf Club, then to Saxon Down (via path in access land not shown on OS map, but the most obvious route on the ground) to Glynde (tea room/small shop/train/pub/public toilet/kombucha brewery!), which avoids going down to Oxteddle Bottom and back up again.
From Glynde village uses Mill Lane (coffee shack) and NCN90 to get to Firle (pub/small shop) and then follows Comp Lane byway through to Alfriston.
Other notes from reviews etc:
Area around Mount Caburn (west of Glynde) is known for sheep ticks.
There is now a light controlled crossing of the busy A27 for this route near Firle.
The byway from Firle to Alfriston should be traffic free but may have deep puddles if you are unlucky with recent weather.
From that byway it's just a few hundred metres walk to visit Charleston, former home of artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, also gallery and garden (you may need to book tickets in advance but garden, cafe and toilets are free).
Later it's another short hop to the church in Berwick which is lavishly decorated by Bell, Grant and others of the Bloomsbury Group (free but donations requested).
Alfriston is small but chocolate box pretty so has a disproportionately large number of eateries.
Alfriston is on several bus routes (119, 125, 126) but has fewer actual buses than that suggests. There may be weekend tourist routes in season. Nearest station is Berwick, 3.8km 2.4mi - nearest A27 pedestrian crossing is Drusilla's Roundabout.
Lewes has more buses and good trains too.
Plenty of places to eat and shop in Lewes too (which is also very attractive)
