Description
A longer route that includes a scenic portion along the River Ouse and up Firle Beacon. For a shorter, hillier option, you can merge parts of Lewalf 2 with this one, passing through Glynde rather than the River Ouse path

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

09 Apr 2024Walked from Alfriston to Lewes on Easter Monday.
Follow the signs for the South downs way and then keep going! After the initial climb out the route isn't too challenging. We stopped when we descended from the downs at YHA southease. From there it's flat walking alongside the river ouse all the way to Lewes.

27 Feb 2023Great views along the River Ouse and South Downs Way at Firle Beacon! I did this from Alfriston to Lewes as part of a longer trail run (from Eastbourne) and wanted to see if this route would avoid the road and tracks a bit more. It means it was actually less of an ascent, but you get some good soft running ground along River Ouse. If you want to get more ascent, if coming from Alfriston, an option could be to turn off just after Firle Beacon towards Glynde and then join Lewalf 2 the rest of the way to Lewes. The path is generally wide and well maintained up to Firle Beacon and well signposted all the way. There are quite a few gates to go through, but no stiles to climb through. There are some steeper climbs, but the views are well worth the effort!
The only thing I'd watch out for is that around the Railway Land Nature Reserve near Lewes it gets pretty muddy. It's a very short section, but my shoes did get quite submerged in mud. OK if you've got quick drying or waterproof shoes, but probably not great for regular trainers.
