Description

This is a route between Letchworth and Stevenage, via Willian and Graveley. The route diverts north of Stevenage to avoid walking alongside and across a major road, instead taking footpaths between houses and through countryside (although this may be subject to redevelopment).

The route passes through Stevenage Old Town, where you could stop for refreshments if needed. Also there are pubs at Willian and Graveley and a village shop at Willian, and lots of facilities at each end of the route

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

This is a good route, with decent enough paths and a logical way to go. However, new build development near Stevenage Old Town means there's a diversion (see photos) for six months from October 2024. The route will need checking after this to ensure footpaths are not extinguished. There is also a minor but not route breaking GPS error (assuming from when this was walked and recorded around Willian, both where the route backtracks on itself, and where he permissive path near Puncharden Hall sits slightly eastward of the intended route. Note that this path makes use of permissive paths in several sections which isn't always obviouly marked when walking in a particular direction.

I have not failed this route, but it should be walked wth care in the first hal of 2025 at least due to footpath diversions.

Reviewed in the direction Letchworth to Stevenage.
A very pleasant route through leafy suburbs on flat pavements and across grassy farmland. The route is slightly longer than Letste One but avoids the heavy traffic around the A1M junction and Corey’s Mill. There two short sections (<100m) on road on lanes in Graveley, where a little extra care is needed.
The main problem is at Willian where there is a short flight of steps. This can be avoided by walking along another short stretch of road (approx. 50m).
Finding your way through the first footpaths on the outskirts of Stevenage is a little bewildering, but modern Stevenage is endowed with wide pedestrian/cycleways and pleasing underpasses separating people from traffic.
For a more attractive approach to the station, continue along Old Stevenage High Street, where there are shops, bars and cafes, through an underpass towards Fairlands Way. Where the footpath ascends a footbridge descend instead a pedestrian/cycleway to the right and follow signs to the station to join the designated SlowWay route.
