Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

26 Aug 2024 Summer

I walked this on a warm and mostly sunny morning from Leighton Buzzard to Dunstable. It had rained in the past 24 hours.

After walking around some residential streets in LB, you soon cross a bridge (photo #1) across the Grand Union Canal (photo #2), which the route the follows for 3 miles. It's quiet and peaceful, albeit a little monotonous. Then it is across and along a few fields with crops (photo #3), before going around a little recreation ground near Slapton. After going past its church (photo #4), there are a few more fields. After crossing a little bridge, the path disappears for about 200 metres (photo #5), and I had to push through tall grass. On the other side, the path was nice again (photo #6).

After a while you get to a quiet lane, followed by a busy road into Northall (photo #7). This was quite annoying, although there was a pavement for the last bit (photo #8). Because of this (and the last stretch along Tring Road) I am marking this as a three star. The original LeiDun 1 has you going through fields, but there is a gate that is closed, and even after you scale it there are way too many cows in a field. Hence me deciding to go around this.

Then you make your way to Eaton Bray along a quiet lane, with little traffic. The town itself has pavements again (photo #8). On its north side the path is a little tricky, with taller grass again (photo #9), and after going across a field (photo #10) you end up on Tring Road, which is a long slog into Dunstable (photo #11, #12).

PitDun 1 also goes from Eaton Bray into Dunstable, and is a much more suitable route, avoiding Tring Road. I'll suggest that as LeiDun 3 (with some other modifications).
