Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

20 Jun 2022 (edited 23 Jun 2022)I walked the route Rothwell to Leeds. It is reasonably direct; the most direct alternative route is alongside busy main roads and is very unpleasant. There is a main road crossing to access the canal towpath at the Rothwell end but then it is traffic free until the centre of Leeds. Navigation is easy, as the route follows the canal towpath for most of the way. It is part of the Sustrans network and the Trans Pennine Trail so is also signposted. The towpath is mainly smooth tarmac, with a few short stretches of packed earth and gravel. Once up and over the hill at the Rothwell end it is flat and easy going. The exception is the road bridge over the canal at Skelton Grange which has to be crossed by steep narrow steps along the bridge at one side and irregular packed earth steps at the other. This section is unsuitable for people with mobility issues and there is no alternative. The route is quite scenic, with the river and/or the canal in view for most of the way. There is industry, but it is not too intrusive. The noisiest section is under the M1 bridge but is only short. Once into the edge of Leeds, there are cafes and shops near the route around the dock areas by the Armouries. The route is very popular with walkers and cyclists. I have walked and cycled it many times, often alone, and have always felt safe and comfortable.

04 Apr 2022Nice walk along the canal and river into Leeds, walk and cycle this frequently. Some points of interest: it passes under the M1 with the river and canal, and the space (and noise) is quite memorable; it passes Thwaite Mills, one of the UKs oldest working water mills; passes Clarence Dock and the Royal Armouries. As noted, there are steps to climb at Skelton Bridge.

30 Apr 2021Mostly quiet. Traffic free route once canal reached. Newly resurfaced canal towpath all the way into Leeds. One bridge crossing requires steps so not wheelchair friendly. But accessible with normal bike if you are able to carry up and down steps. Semi-rural to industrial and urban landscape.
