Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

21 Aug 2023This route is mainly through arable farmland using field edge paths and paths through wooded areas. There is a small proportion of walking on minor country roads where there is a verge but no pavement, however there is little traffic. At some points the footpath crosses cropped fields where the farmer has not reinstated the path. Brambles can be a problem so best to take secateurs. The footpath has been diverted near High Rodingbury Church where it used to run alongside a fishing lake and now is parallel to this on the other side of a hedge. It is clearly marked with footpath signs, photos included. Between Great Canfield and Bacon End the footpath marked on the map would take you through the crop but parallel to this is a field track marking the boundary between two crops which is much easier to walk on and takes you to the same end point. If walking from Dunmow to Leaden Roding you would need to go left from where the footpath crosses the road, follow the edge of the field until you meet the track.
It is possible to get a bus to either end but not partway through (the service that runs along the B184 has one bus a day at around 9 am but would drop you at the Axe and Compasses pub which is halfway along the route if you only wanted to do half).
I would recommend this route and will be walking it again.
