Description
Having failed two versions of Larwes I offer this alternative to try, which uses quiet roads and cycle tracks. I considered following the coastal path but it adds 2 miles onto the route. I haven’t walked this (except on Google Street View)

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

11 Oct 2024Review of Slow Way route Larwes3 (Largs to West Kilbride Three)
I walked this lovely route on a day of mixed weather in October 2024. It is a very pleasant, easy to follow route with beautiful scenery, good walking (and cycling) surfaces and numerous points of interest along the way. The route out of Largs is straightforward, hugging the coast as it follows pavements and footpaths south as far as Fairlie Marina. The route then heads a little inland and follows the pavement next to the A78 into Fairlie. This is a busy road which it is necessary to cross twice in order to make the best use of the pavements provided. However, as long as care is taken to cross safely (pedestrian crossings are not provided), it does not present much of an inconvenience. Soon the route returns to hug the coastline along an excellent concrete walkway (which was having some maintenance work done on the day I passed). After passing a tidal lagoon (filled with birds), the route again follows the edge of the A78. Here, the foot/cycle path is separated from the road by either a wide grass verge or a bank of trees, making the going quite pleasant. Very soon, the route heads away from the main road and follows a wide arc along (mostly tarmac) forest tracks and estate roads through lovely countryside around Hunterston Castle. This is the most pleasant part of the route. Eventually the A78 is rejoined, briefly, before the route heads uphill via Drummilling Road, to arrive in West Kilbride. Please note that there is no verge to walk on here, so care must be taken, especially with blind summits and blind corners. There is then an easy, downhill stretch to the town’s railway station and the end of the route. I loved this route, but have deducted one star due to the lack of pavement or verge on Drummilling Road. Nevertheless a great route which will be enjoyed by walkers and cyclists alike.
