Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

06 Jun 2024The first part of this route, along the prom from Largs, was superb. It was away from the traffic and along the coast, tarmacked and with lots of interest. It joined the road (on a pavement) for a short while, and then went down to the beach at Fairlie Sands. I stopped for some lunch at the Village Inn here, a third of the way into the route. There was a concrete path along the edge of the beach, and although part of it was temporarily closed for repairs, it was easy to walk around that part on the beach itself.
The next section started well; past the station and up past Fairlie Castle, then up the hillside, following a trodden path, with great views over the coast, and into some pretty woods. There was a river crossing here which needed to be forded using the rough stones. I wished I’d brought a pole with me, but managed okay without.
However… There had been signs earlier saying that forestry work was going on and that some paths may be closed. I reached this where the path left Southannan Burn. There were no actual signs telling me to go no further, so I ploughed on, with some difficulty. What had looked on the map and the satellite view like a nice gravelled forestry track had been turned into a mudbath quagmire.
I ploughed on, but a bit up the hill from the track, which was difficult going as it was quite tussocky, sometimes with bracken. Such a pity because the views were superb. I feel that this has the potential to be a good route if this track recovers. Eventually I reached the quiet road by Glenside Wood.
The route I walked is described here https://gillianswalks.com/2020/09/03/fairlie-glens-waterfalls-circular/ although the mudbath forestry works are noted!
I’m sure there is a good path from Fairlie Moor Road across a field or two to a gate into the woods surrounding Glen Burn and Linnford Waterfall, as I have found walk reports for here including this one https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=103679. However I failed to find the right one, and ended up having to climb a rather aggressive new fence. One in the wood, the path was very nice and easy to follow, and brought me out to Biglies Farm. The road from here was easy to follow right into West Kilbride, although from North Kilruskin it got a little bit busier with traffic and no pavement.
So this walk had some potential, and might make a good route when the forest work is tidied up and the final bit has a better tweak! But I’m going to have to fail my own route for now!.
