Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

A much better and pleasurable alternative to the original! And, by my reckoning, mostly accessible (just a couple of bits that wheelchair users may struggle unaided).

The departure from Kirkby centre, whilst on a main road, is on a good foot and cycle path combo, before we join the Kirkby Valley Greenway. Good tarmac footpath takes us through some nice shady wooded areas, before we eventually join a paved residential road. It is here that there are no ramps or low kerbs at junctions.

Past the major crossroads (with good crossings), we continue along the Greenway (again, not many ramps), before turning away from the industrial estate and, once under the M57, we join a great wooded footpath. It does run alongside the motorway, but it's a pleasant green wander.

After about a mile and a half, we come out into the open once more, crossing the motorway once more, before joining the paved road that runs alongside the Knowsley estate. Eventually, we meet the A57, using the crossings provided, and begin our final ascent towards Prescot.

A good route with shops and transport at both ends, but mostly foot-only.

Initial section is a cycle path along the busy Valley Road then onto Ribblers Lane, which follows the M57.
After crossing the busy East Lancs dual carriageway the route goes onto the Gellings bridleway, again alongside the M57, before going onto Knowsley Lane for the final section. Nearing the end a busy roundabout has to be negotiated.
Plenty of facilities at start and finish.
