16 May 2023From Fulwood to the canal the route was mostly suburban streets, but there was a delightful wooded path next to a stream between Hollybank and a school. The turnoff just before Cadley would be easy to miss – it’s just a gap in a high hedge.
I enjoy a bit of canal towpath walking, it’s usually either very pleasant, or at least interesting. This was mostly the former, although I rarely seemed to be far from the background drone of roads, suburbia, and factories. There were several benches along here.
After leaving the canal, the route to Kirkham was mostly very quiet country roads. However there was one field crossing just after Salwick Station where there was no sign of the footpath shown on the OS Map, but it looked as if people occasionally walked around the field edge, so that’s what I did, especially as thistles lurked in the grass! There were a couple of electric fences to watch out for at the stiles too.
The country lanes into Kirkham were very quiet, with just a few dog-walkers using them. Kirkham itself was undergoing some remodelling of the market square meeting point as part of a programme of work to revitalise the town centre. Let’s hope they succeed in achieving a better balance of cars and people in what could be a really nice little historic town.
