Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Hiking Historian
26 Dec 2023A mixture of urban road walks and rural paths. Despite some paved roads, as the route progresses into the countryside it passes along footpaths and fields, so is foot-only.
From the centre of Kirkby, with its transport links and shopping, we progress through residential areas which gradually gives way to industrial estates. It's a long road walk in uninteresting surroundings, but it is direct.
At the end of a long road, we join another road; it does have a pavement, albeit overgrown in places, so it's best to walk on the road. At a junction, it becomes unpaved, but it only serves a handful of houses and farms, so traffice is minimal.
The road terminates at the last house, where a footpath runs between hedges ahead. We pass a couple of barriers, and then, at the Coach Road, across a field following the hedges, which becomes a track through and to a horse farm and stables. Through the farmyard, we take the driveway to the road, where we cross and follow a footpath alongside the brook.
At another road, we follow a track (not an official footpath, but a well-used local desire path) along the edge of a field, until we follow the route until it crosses the A580; there's gaps in the crash barriers where to cross. Itsthen a series of tracks and footpaths across the fields and recreational grounds until we come to Eccleston and its end near library, shops and bus stops.
A good walk once in the country, but the industrial estate beginning isn't the best start! Still, it's the best route available.

05 Mar 2023Initially a route along a busy road past an industrial/business area. Then onto a quiet single lane road and dirt path, and past farm buildings. Then across a road with poor visibility due to bends. Then back onto a mix of dirt path and compact stone surfaces until the crossing of the east lancs dual carriageway. The final stretch is a dirt path across fields and a short residential paved section.
