30 Dec 2022Mixed terrain route between Maidstone and Kings Hill. I walked in winter starting from Maidstone.
Middle section of the walk can be very muddy with large/deep puddles that were unavoidable on the day I walked.
Quite overgrown on one section with a fallen tree making it low and narrow.
There are several places where a more direct route could be taken with map reading or advance route planning.
There are several obstacles that could be an issue for wheelchair users (not to mention the poor surface on some sections) though these can be detoured around.
There's around 10-15 minutes of road walking, although I only encountered 2 cars as the road is quiet. There is however 2 potentially dangerous/busy roads with no formal crossing available.
Overall an acceptable route, though it could be better routed (but I appreciate it is limited by the lack of options in some areas).

20 May 2021This is a reasonable slow route between Maidstone and Kingshill. I walked this in 2 sections in May, first from Maidstone to Northpole Road, Barming Heath in a couple of hours. For first section, weather was fair apart from hale storm and ground conditions generally dry before the downpour. Mainly road routes from Maidstone Museum over railway bridge and up Buckland Hill. Then crossing pedestrian crossing at top before turning up Bower Mount Road. Then took a good path which eventually turns into 'dogdoo' alley ( informal sign on the route) and continues behind the Maidstone Hospital. Surfaces are good paths to this point and suitable for wheels with some chippings and gradual climb. Then crossing Hermitage Lane ( no designated crossing so care needed) and then up woodland path . This is fair quality surface when dry. Good path continues to Barming Heath. ( building site on either side of path and manned crossing at the time of walk) . Road walking through Barming Heath to Northpole Road.
Second part of walk from Northpole Road goes past converted Water tower then left through Oaken wood on good wide path with variable surface including stone chippings. Route goes past farmland to Sweets Lane . Then follow Sweets Lane for 1/2 mile across cross -roads ( 4 wents) then left is a footpath that goes straight to Kings Hill Sports ground. Final section is road section with pavier bricks. Straightforward finish into Kings Hill.
Overall had small climbs and falls and surfaces vary from pavement to prepared paths with chippings and some narrower paths with routes. Good walking when dry. 2 gates but generally accessible for wheels. Will need confirmation ok for all wheel types.
Note there are some road sections and road crossing needed.
Also spotted goldfinches in Kings Hill. Came back a more direct route through the middle of Oaken Wood which avoids some of the road section on Sweets Road.
