Strider
01 Mar 2025I walked from Oaklands to Kimpton on an unfeasibly sunny February day, although a welcome chill in the light North wind.
Small parade of shops at Oaklands, then uphill and upmarket to a wooded area and across fields with horses, Gates here are surrounded by stoach (mud churned up by many foot/hoof prints) which after recent rain was wet and sticky. Then fenced-in paths around field edges before crossing a road and crossing vast open fields with views. Down hill to Codicote and car congestion and cafes. Then along (an almost hidden) cut through. There were a team of volunteers installing steps here, and they stopped to let me pass. Uphill between an avenue of trees to more wide open fields (wish I'd bought a sun hat) to Ayot-St-Lawrence a place of architectural oddities and a pub. More rolling fields to Kimpton.
There's not a flat spot on this walk , it's uphill or down , some parts steep 20% some long slogs of 12% but hills bring views. A beautiful walk, hints of bluebells in the woods. Paths over fields were well marked and will be through crops in summer. Some walking in quiet roads but very little if any traffic. Quite muddy in places in winter.

28 Apr 2021A good route with stopping points in picturesque Ayot St Lawrence (Brocket Arms pub; Shaw's corner National Trust property) and Codicote (pubs, cafes and shops in high street). The route is generally well-signposted. Only one stile to navigate. Two flights of stairs outside Codicote but gentle gradient. Some hills, but gentle. Ends in Oaklands with small arcade of shops and busses to Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City.
