Description
I adjusted the route to avoid the Carnell Estate, which I think is private. Also, we worried that there might be access and animal issues through the longish section of field crossings just north of Mauchline, so I found an easier way. I also took the opportunity to avoid the busy main roads at the two ends of the route

22 Sep 2024We walked this route on a rainy September Sunday, which sadly hampered the views, though on a clear day there should be excellent vistas of the surrounding countryside. Walking south from Kilmarnock, it takes a little while to get out of the town, but this section is well paved and simple to navigate. Once past the bypass, the route is much nicer on country lanes that roll downhill to Mauchline.

22 Sep 2024We walked this route in mid-September on a wet afternoon which sadly hampered visibility, but the route is easy to navigate. Coming through Kilmarnock at the beginning is straightforward, with pavements for safe crossings. The terrain is easy going on mostly tarmac roads, with a few relatively steep sections allowing for good views (weather permitting!). The roads are mostly quiet, with verges where necessary for passing traffic. The route ends on quieter, residential streets leading to the centre of Mauchline. A straight-forward and fairly scenic route.

19 Sep 2024We walked this route on a wet afternoon in September. The initial stretch through Kilmarnock and housing out to the A77 is fine, with plenty of pavement and crossings. Due to low cloud, we didn't get much of the views beyond this point(!) but the going was steady and easy on a very quiet rural road, with verges if necessary. The decent into Mauchline is equally easy and straightforward, with a number of food options in the town.

09 Jun 2024Review of Slow Ways Route Kilmau 2 (Kilmarnock to Mauchline two)
I walked this route with another person on a mild day in early June 2024. The route is a modified version of the previous Kilmau one. The route begins in Kilmarnock town centre and initially follows the Kilmarnock Water to and through Howard’s Park. It then strikes off along town streets to enter an extensive housing estate around Treeswoodhead. This is not a particularly interesting stretch but is necessary to bring the traveller to the edge of the town. After crossing the M77 on an elevated road section, farmland is reached. The going is then much more interesting and pleasant views open up. The terrain is fairly hilly with some steep sections but the surface is good, this section being almost entirely on metalled roads. There is one significant road crossing to negotiate (at Fivewayhouse) but thereafter quiet roads again predominate. Between the farms of Rottenrow and Skeoch, the road is left and a faint track along field edges is followed. When we were there, a boisterous group of cows was in the adjacent field. However they were well-contained and did not cause any hazard. There are several farm gates to negotiate along this section but after about ten minutes, the road is regained. There is then an easy section, although along a slightly busier road which requires some care, until the Mauchline National Burns Memorial comes into view. Some quiet, residential streets are then followed to the centre of Mauchline and the end of the route. Overall an interesting and quite scenic route with several points of interest along the way. The mapping is accurate and easy to follow. The sections leaving Kilmarnock and arriving in Mauchline are not particularly interesting. No significant obstacles were encountered but the requirement to climb a few farm gates may deter some travellers.

07 Jun 2024We left Kilmarnock through shopping streets and then crossed the river to walk through the park rather than along the busy main road, a short detour which I felt was worthwhile. After a series of residential streets, we reached the quiet countryside roads which made up the majority of the route. We saw hardly any vehicles but lots of good views.
There was a short field crossing which became a farm track before reaching another quiet road. This was fine and quite easy walking although we were worried by a lively herd of young cattle intently interested in us but fortunately fenced off from us.
It was quite fun to pass a ventilation shaft for the Mossgiel railway tunnel just north of Mauchline (yes, I know I’m a geek).
We arrived at Mauchline at the sandstone Burns Memorial Tower and associated cottages, then a few short residential streets brought us to the main crossroads.
A direct and mostly very easy route, complemented by long views all around.
