Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Review of Slow Way Kilgal three (Kilmarnock to Galston 3).
I walked this route as I was designing it (to replace Kilgal one which I found to include a link which was inviable) on a damp morning in July 2025. I walked from Galston to Kilmarnock and will review the route in that direction.
The route leaves the centre of Galston by following Station Road, Wallace Street and Barr Street (passing the interesting Barr Castle). After crossing a burn, the original route suggested crossing Cemetery Road and taking what is now St Mary's Holm, the access road to a newly-built housing estate. I tried this route but there was no way through. Instead, the route should turn left onto Cemetery Road (take care as there is no pavement), turn right just before the cemetery (into Kyle Court) and then take the cyclepath which heads off to the right. This is the Chris Hoy cyclepath which runs in a straight line (with only two road crossings) all the way to the edge of Hurlford. This is the best part of the route, going through rolling farmland with an excellent, metalled surface and verges full of colourful flowers. After several kilometres of pleasant travel, the route enters Hurlford and follows the B7073 all the way to the centre of Kilmarnock. Although there is a good pavement and there are interesting sights along the way, this is a much less pleasant stretch. However eventually the centre of Kilmarnock is reached with Kilmarnoch Bus Station marking the end of the route. This route is very heavily based on Kilgal one with the only change being the link between the Chris Hoy cycleway and Barr Street, Galston. It is simple to follow and could be completed by bicycle or on foot. It would also be possible (albeit rather long) for pushchairs and wheelchairs.
