Description

This follows the existing KIBGAT route but with three key changes.
* crossing the A184 - use the footbridge 200 yards further along
* crossing the B1426 Lobley Hill Road - use the underpass, the footbridge and the other underpass to join the Coach Road 400 yards north of the original route
* the whole section from Banesley Lane to Ouslaw Lane is unsafe - reroute via Lady Park and Lamesley

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

A good route with a pleasant and surprisingly green north half in Gateshead with the cycle way and Riverside Park taking you all the way to the south bank of the Tyne.
The south half is walking on minor roads, but even on a Sunday afternoon there were enough passing cars to require caution. This is especially so on the Coach Road where the noise of the nearby A1 means you can't always hear traffic coming.
Lamesley near the south end has a nice pub and those who wish can make a detour of less than a mile to see the Angel of the North up on the hill.

Agree about the Coach Road. The A1 roadworks south from Coalhouse Roundabout is causing people to divert off the main road to avoid the queuing traffic. Hopefully, the volume of vehicles will reduce once the works are complete in the next year.

As this is my route not sure I should give it 5 stars! This route attempts to fix three safety issues with KIBGAT1. This makes is a safer and better route than the previous route.
In summary this route is in two halves - the town centre section which is actually almost all off road, and the rural section which is on quiet lanes and footpaths along quiet roads. There are a couple of sections coming out of Gateshead town centre which are quiet steep and may not be suitable for wheeled users, but the rest is pretty flat with good exit ramps from subways etc.
The section from Lobley Hill south follows the old Coach Road, and is generally quiet. However, it is a well known "rat run" and delays on the A1 can result in lots of extra (and sometimes very unsuitable) traffic using it.
Overall a good balance of a safe route in town that is off road, and compromise on the rural leg due to the lack of public rights of way around the Ravensworth Estate.
