Description

This is identical to the old Keywic One route, but fixes a section which takes you under a bridge and across a river. This section is impassable in the original route because there is no path along the river, is incredibly steep on either side and even if you did make it under the bridge, the other side is completely fenced off and there is no way out

16 Nov 2022 Autumn

Note that this is a review that I originally posted in February 22 on Keywic one which has a mapping inaccuracy. This route is the corrected, accurate version and I have moved it over.

We walked from Wick to Keynsham. It is a good ramble, mainly along the valley of the River Boyd, with a bit of a diversion uphill into the Cotswold village of Upton Cheney along the way, with an approach to Keynsham along the River Avon.

A good walk with some lovely sections but overall not quite a five star from me. I suspect it is best walked in the other direction, with views ahead into the hills for a lot of the way.

The route is fairly easy to navigate as it follows the Monarch’s Way long distance path, and it was surprisingly dry underfoot for a river valley in February. There is a pub in Upton Cheney and another along the short section of main road through Bitton, which also has a little convenience shop.

If you wanted a slightly more direct route or to avoid climbing the moderate hill into Upton Cheney, the quiet road along the Golden Valley to Bitton also looks fine to walk along.

Fine updated route correcting the errors in Keywic one. I too encountered lots of horses ( but no cows !). Pub in Upton Cheyney, and pub, shop and bus stop in Bitton. I recorded the route at 5.80 mi. I ignored the final set of 50 + steps leading up to Keynsham Town Hall, preferring the nearby gradual pavement. En route I encountered 15 galv/timber kissing gates, 9 stiles ( 4 timber, 5 stone ), a couple of bridges with gates, and a few sets of steps ( ignoring the Keynsham ones ! ) I also recce'd the quiet road between Boyd Farm and Aubrey Meads as an shorter Keywic three. It reduces the walk to 5.05 mi, and cuts out 175' of ascent.

This is a great route - crossing some beautiful countryside. It is easy to navigate, mostly following the well waymarked Monarch's Way. I had no problems at all when walking this route although I met a lot of horses in fields - so if they worry you, that might be something to consider.

The correction that Keywic two makes at the start (the Keynsham end) is important. I would have been quite confused if I had tried to follow the original not knowing the area, though I'm sure I would have eventually worked it out). Still, it is worth having this corrected route here.

Overall, a wonderful walk - highly recommended.
