Beautiful route down the west side of Derwent Water, through beautiful Borrowdale and Stonethwaite, along the fantastic remote Langstrath, up Stake Beck waterfalls and into the stunning Langdale valley to Chapel Stile.

19 Feb 2026Well... I didn't set out to walk this Slow Way... it just kind of happened! It's based on a stretch of the Cumbria Way, which I was following for a three days in the depths of winter. The day I walked from Chapel Stile to the Old Dungeon Ghyll, through Great Langdale, was grey and overcast. The day I walked from the Old Dungeon Ghyll, over Stake Pass and down through Langstrathdale was very cold, with a good covering of snow on top of the pass. The descent linked with a short stretch of the newly-signposted Coast to Coast Walk. My last day was from Rosthwaite, along the shore of Derwent Water to Keswick, which was cold but sunny. Overall, a great route through the heart of the Lake District, and the only part where I really met any other walkers was alongside Derwent Water to Keswick. The very last path into Keswick was closed for resurfacing, so I had to follow another path alongside the main road to enter town. That path will reopen soon. I managed to reach the bus five minutes before it set off, which was perfect timing.

23 Aug 2025Incredible walk I would do again and again - definitely in my top 10 Slow Ways.
The only major uphill section is Stake Pass and it winds up so not too steep up and the waterfall there is great.
There are just so many places to stop and take in the amazing views.
Its a long walk but I've routed it make it as straightforward and simple to walk as possible considering the geography between the towns !
Rosthwaite is the only place in between to get any food and drink. The food is pricey as its a hotel and they didn't cater for casual walkers just after chips. Can recommend the Ullswater Blonde though. Chapel Stile has a decent store and a cafe. Keswick caters for everyone.
Stake Pass is the only high level section which may get tricky in misty, rainy or snowy conditions.
