11 Jun 2025I walked from Kendal to Sedbergh on a dry dull day with rain towards the end. There had been some rain previously, following a dry spell.
Because the Dales Way doesn’t actually go through Kendal and Sedbergh, only 55% is actually along the Dales Way. This part was generally easy to follow and well-maintained, although the signposting was better in the opposite direction, and a couple of stiles were in poor condition. It was all rather lovely though, especially all the wild flower meadows in June.
The first 31%, before reaching the Dales Way, made use of a lovely field footpath alongside the River Mint, and then about a mile and a half of minor road through Meal Bank. This was a little bit busier than I remember it being when I walked the route from Kendal to Tebay.
There were stiles of all types, narrow bridges, steps, and mud, and at Old Field End some poor gate maintenance. There were cows a couple of times, but only on the Dales Way, where they ignored the fairly frequent humans. Some of the section alongside the River Lune through the woods needed care where there was a drop down to the river.
There were fantastic views and beautiful nature. For me, Lowgill Viaduct was a highlight. I also had a glimpse of the Lune Viaduct towards Sedbergh, but then left the Dales Way, where navigation towards Height of Winder was slightly tricky.
The last mile and a half into Sedbergh was along a very quiet, single-track road. I had considered taking a path along the higher flanks of Winder, just above Nursery Wood, but after a fairly long walk, the last bit pushing through long grass, I was glad to stretch my legs pacing downhill into Sedbergh, and avoid another climb.
This could easily be a 5* route with a bit of maintenance in places, and nicer weather.
