Description
This is a more accurate version of the route. The original route doesn't show enough detail, particularly at the Irvine end, and also near Dreghorn. I had to double back several times. Also, it is so loosely plotted that correct plotting adds at least half a mile to the distance

23 Jul 2024Review of Slow Ways route Irvkil two (Irvine to Kilmarnock)
I walked this route in two sections: the first from Dreghorn to Kilmarnock at the end of May 2024 and the second, Irvine to Dreghorn, two months later. However I am presenting this review as a single walk for clarity. The route is easy to follow, predominantly flat and predominantly on good surfaces. It presented no problems to me as a walker and would also be entirely suitable as a cycling route. As the previous reviewer has pointed out, the initial section down to the riverside in Irvine requires a little care as a large area has been cordoned off for the demolition of existing buildings and the construction of new ones. However the all-purpose route along the river is unaffected and once found (down the side of the Rivergate Shopping Centre) it is easy to follow. After initially following the River Irvine, the route switches to the banks of the Annick Water. It makes good use of underpasses (with one road crossing via a pedestrian crossing) and quickly reaches the edge of town at the Newmoor interchange. Between a filling station and a car showroom, the route branches off to begin a long, straight section which runs (with only one short deviation) all the way to the edge of Kilmarnock. The exception is a short detour midway between Dreghorn and Springside which enables the route to work its way under and around the busy Towerlands Road. Thereafter the route crosses three or four kilometres of farmland to arrive at Western Road, Kilmarnock. There is then a short, downhill section (following the National Cycling Route 73 signs) all the way to the centre of Kilmarnock. I am happy to recommend this route.

07 Jun 2024The route leaving Irvine is complicated by some building work going on next to the river, but once you reach the river it is quite easy to follow. Most of the roads are crossed by underpasses. There were many giant hogweeds, some right next to the footpath. They have a very nasty sting and need to be avoided. There was quite a lot of it.
I often heard the sound of the traffic but the route itself was tucked away out of sight next to the river, through trees and grassland. It was all well signed as cycle route 73, but occasionally junctions and access points are a bit fiddly.
I took a small detour at Dreghorn to the Brae pub for lunch. From here the route was a very easy former railway cycle track into Kilmarnock mostly surrounded by nature.
