Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

13 Nov 2023A pleasant route between two attractive villages.
With the exception of Mere Way, the route is on pavements through the villages and along the main road. Some of the pavements are a little uneven (see photographs). There is now a pedestrian crossing to cross the A10. Both Impington/Histon and Waterbeach are well served with cafes, pubs and shops.
Note: Work is underway to upgrade Mere Way and when finished it will be a hard surface pathway for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians. There is currently a narrow grass path along the length of Mere way and the work is due to be completed by the end of 2023.

10 Jan 2022Mostly paved route except for a section on Mere Way, an old Roman road which can be quite muddy in the winter. The path from Mere Way to Impington is on a fast road, but the pavement is segregated so should be ok except for the occasional bike which often decide to use the pavement to avoid the road.
Very little in the way of facilities between Waterbeach and Impington, but at 5 miles that shouldn't be too big of an issue.

02 May 2021An easy attractive route, mostly on pavement with a few stretches of single track lane. The only unmetalled section is a well compacted stretch of old Roman road. The route is almost entirely flat; but being on the edge of the fens means it is quite exposed if northerly or easterly winds are blowing.
Impington/Histon are well served with a number of pubs. Histon has a lovely village green complete with duckpond and a nearby Co-op and post office.
Following New Road out of Impington takes you past the Village College. It is Grade I listed due to its status as an early example of modernist architecture in England. It was designed Maxwell Fry and Walter Gropius (founder of the Bauhaus design school in Germany).
Clay Close Lane is an attractive single track road, some miniature ponies were happily grazing a paddock at the east end during my walk in Spring 2021.
A pavement then runs alongside Milton Road until you turn onto an unpaved track that is a remnant of the Akeman Street Roman Road that would have taken legionaries north to defend the Saxon Shore at Brancaster. Beyond the high hedges there are many large polytunnels for fruit growing.
The track turns into a quiet paved lane and the spire of All Saints marks the village of Landbeach. It is worth turning off Waterbeach Road to see the tithe barn that was rethatched and repaired in 2020 thanks to the great efforts of a charitable trust (the access is just opposite no. 2 ‘Far View’). See Tithebarntrust.org.uk to see if it will be open for an event.
A little further on you pass Matthew Parker Close (presumably named after the original ‘nosey parker’, a Cambridge educated archbishop).
Waterbeach Road has pavement all the way; interrupted by a crossing of the very busy A10 that involves a dash to a central reservation.
Landbeach and Waterbeach both pre-date the Domesday book and their names tell you this is an ancient shoreline where the land once sank into marshy fens.
Waterbeach has an attractive triangular green overlooked by two pubs (The Sun, The White Horse), The Pharmacie café/pizzeria; and Londis and OneStop shops.
Waterbeach is due to be transformed into a town during the 2020s with the construction of 6,500 homes on the site of an old military barracks to the north of the village.
