Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

This is a good and direct urban Slow Way. It follows roads that are much busier than Impcam Two. If you want to shave some time this will be a better way to go... but Impcam Two is far more varied, free of traffic and enjoyable.

This route is direct and accessible - on paved footway adjacent to the road for the whole route. It is entirely by the road (including some quite busy stretches). Note that currently there are extensive roadworks on Histon Road in Cambridge, which may restrict the accessibility of the route in the short term for those wheeling.

The roadworks are now complete. I agree with the rest of your review.

4 stars due to the largely urban route. The route is entirely pavement. Leaving Cambridge there is a relatively steep haul up Castle Hill on the north bank of the Cam, after that the route is fairly level.

At the top of Castle Hill look out for the earthwork ‘motte’ in front of Shire Hall, this is all that remains of the original Norman castle and climbing it gains you a good view over Cambridge.

The route then follows Histon Road where major roadworks should be complete by summer 2021. Cycle lanes and ‘island’ bus stops are being added that mean cyclists won’t have to pull out into the traffic if a bus has halted.

There are traffic light crossings at the large roundabout where the route passes over the A14 motorway. You can look down on the many container lorries carrying freight from Felixstowe into the Midlands.

The turn into Bridge Road is marked by a joyful steel Camel, one of many sculptures made by local man Tony Hillier, and donated to the community by his window Joan. If you bring some chalk you are welcomed to add your own decoration.

Impington/Histon are well served by a number of pubs. Histon has a lovely village green complete with duckpond and a nearby Co-op and post office.
