17 Jun 2023I walked this route from Ilminster to Langport and found it to be a great walk. I saw that a lot of the route was over footpaths across farmland, none of them part of a recognised trail, and I was prepared for a battle with crops, livestock and overgrown paths. I needn't have worried. Many of the paths across crops are cut and well maintained. There were a couple of places where crops were across the path, but in the first case (at Stockbridge) there was a path around the field edge, and the second time it was easy to walk through the crops without damaging them. I was walking on earth there though, and in wet weather that field would be heavy going.
The field exits became more overgrown after Barrington, but there was only one that was really bad, and that has been reported, so fingers crossed. I would advise a map and/or GPS to find the exits, some are easy to walk past. The beginning of Lobbs Lane was very tricky to spot and I initially thought it was impassable, but once you get on track it's fine. If you walk in the opposite direction, you can't miss it. It's a sunken, enclosed track and once I was on it, it felt like another world. I walked on a hot summer day and this track was instantly cooler. The vegetation was dense, full of birds and I even saw a baby wren perch in front of me. Quite different from the fields of crops.
There were a few cows and horses, but they were no threat.
The route goes through Barrington, Hambridge and Drayton and all have pubs, so plenty of opportunities to have a break. It's also, mostly flat, so not too strenuous. Once you have crossed the A303 the traffic noise disappears quickly and it's a peaceful stroll through the country.
