Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

22 Jun 2024This Slow Way takes a direct route between the two settlements, mostly on a shared-use footpath/cycleway along the dismantled Hetton Colliery Railway line, with additional sections on other rights-of-way and pavements. It passes through some of the quieter, less well-known parts of the two settlements, mostly residential areas. However there is extensive public open space along the route, and there are views of nearby meadows, with more distant views of hills away to the west in the direction of the Durham Dales.
In terms of topography the terrain is gently undulating, with good underfoot conditions from start to finish.
Signs defining the shared-use footpath/cycleway are clearly visible, but we had to use the map to check the route on a couple of occasions.
There are bus stops with a regular service at the start and finish of the route in Hetton and Houghton; there are also shops and refreshments available in both settlements.

08 Aug 2024Thanks for this great review. Would Chris and Jeff consider offering brief reviews too which would verify this route.

21 Aug 2024Hi Philip,
The three of us walked the route together and contributed jointly to the review. I can see why you would welcome reviews from Jeff and Chris, but I feel these would simply duplicate our original review.
Kind regards, Richard Hockin
