Description

This route is about 1.8km / 1mi shorter than HorMid 1 and has considerably less road walking, down from 12 km to 3km. Total ascent/descent is very similar.

While HorMid 1 would probably have good views from the South Downs hills between Treyford Hill and Cocking this version is likely to have longer stretches (and possibly better views) from around Chalton Down then later from the South Downs scarp between the B1246 (near South Harting) and Harting Down. This route deliberately goes up and over Beacon Hill (maximising the views) but if you are walking east there has just been a long steep climb from Elsted so you may be tempted to stick to the South Downs Way. That path is 1km longer but only moderately steep, at least by South Downs standards.

This route overlaps with several long distance walking routes where waymarking and maintainance tend to be well above average.

Buses 54 and 91 intersect and sometimes run parallel to this route, see first mini map for potentially useful escape points. Midhurst has a station and Horndean doesn't, although Rowlands Castle is not far away.

Eat/rest options (aka pubs) are either on the route or less than 1.5km away*. Chalton @6km, South Harting* @13km (+café, shop and 2 buses), Elsted @18km (+bus), Elsted Marsh* (+bus) @20km, Bepton Common @24.5km. See second mini map

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.
