Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

24 Apr 2022This is a great route. I'll certainly be walking it again and would certainly recommend it to others! The only reason it does not get 4* from me is because of the field to the east of Hook and the River Whitewater that other have described. It'll be fine when it's dry... I agree another drier option for when it has been wet would be great.
That said, I'd not let the warning put you off too much. It's a really interesting and enjoyable route!.

24 Apr 2022This is a really lovely route to walk. The trees in Hartley Wintney are great and I enjoyed seeing lots of horses. The only downside is the footpath that runs just parallel to the River Whitewater below the A30 just outside hook. These fields clearly get very wet and muddy. On the dry day we walked down the path and ground was very bumpy and full of holes from where cows has been walking. It was totally manageable, but would be tricky on a wet day. Another route option for wet days would be great.

27 Sep 2021A mixture of urban paths and field crossings, which can get quite wet at times. It's safe and accessible. The Footpath signposts across the fields are visible. It's close to Hook and Winchfield train stations.

17 Sep 2021A pleasant, mainly traffic free way of getting from Hook to Hartley Wintney. For approx 1st mile on OS path through fields the going is very difficult in places, mainly due to deep ruts caused by cattle. Extreme care is required. After that it becomes much easier and is a very pleasant walk.

07 Sep 2021Achieves aim of walking from Hook to Hartley Wintney. First km or so need to navigate local roads and footpaths. The route should be rerouted through the underpass under Griffen way rather than crossing the busy road. Once on OS path (opposite Crooked Billet) the next km is poorly marked and difficult going due to soft, rutted ground caused by cattle - would be difficult when we and it gets VERY wet. This is not considered suitable for wheels. Second half of route is good going on better made up footpaths and paths and is very pleasant.

05 Sep 2021A lovely varied walk but note that there are several stiles and we encountered lots of cows when we walked it. Could be very muddy in wet weather, and was badly rutted in the fields at the Hook end of the walk, so not suitable for everyone. Took in part of King John’s Ride (see bench in pictures for details).
