Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

  1. Complete the survey training.

23 May 2021 Spring

I walked and reviewed this route on a damp day in early May 2021 accompanied by my two dogs.
Overall this was a very pleasant walk through the unspoilt and very rural North Devon countryside.
I have given 4 stars rather than the maximum 5 due to an error when leaving Holsworthy town and a very unsafe 0.75 miles along a fast A road with no pedestrian off road route. There are easy diversions to avoid both of these concerns which I took to keep safe and legal.
Leaving Holsworthy, it is not possible to cross the viaduct as indicated as this is private land with no public access. Instead I followed the footpath behind the church which crosses the river and a couple of fields (sometimes with livestock) and emerges at the A338 just above and opposite the off road track following the old railway line known locally as the Ruby Way.
The track is and well maintained to Staddon Lane which is then crossed and the track continues to reach the hamlet of Hollacombe. The next (and largest portion) of this Slow Way then follows very quiet narrow country lanes until is joins the very busy and unsafe A3092 towards Okehampton. I diverted at this point to continued on narrow lanes (where I was treated to a herd of fallow deer crossing from field to woodland) to join a public footpath that crosses Langaford Moor emerging at a safe point to cross the A3092 to continue off road through Forestry woodland and a Devon Wildlife Trust nature reserve to Hallwill Junction.
