Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

A pleasant and easy to follow route mainly avoiding the busy A505 Cambridge Road. Some of the route follows the Hitchin Outer Orbital Path (HOOP) and Letchworth Greenway and so the off road areas are well maintained. The walk between the A505 and Hillbrow has good views across the fields to Hitchin. Most of the pavement walking once you have passed through Purwell Meadow is on quiet residential streets. I attach some photos of the off-pavement paths.

A pleasant and direct walk between Hitchin and Letchworth. There were some nice views, particularly in the middle of the walk. The route felt safe and was enjoyable to walk.

Walked Hitchin to Letchworth in dry conditions. This is a pleasant route partially in built up areas on pavements and partially in countryside on well maintained tracks. Purwell Meadows are worth exploring if you have the time.

There is a mini supermarket on Hitchin station approaches, and pubs on route. Halfway along the route is a garden centre which has a cafe and toilets. There are plenty of eating places in the centre of Letchworth and a supermarket.

The footpath under the railway bridge at Hitchin is on the opposite side of the road to the station and it is narrow (less than 1 metre). There is no footpath under the bridge on the same side as the station.

The narrowest point on the route is on the path (less than 1 metre) just as it emerges on to the A505 road between Hitchin and Letchworth.

There are kissing gates at the entrance and exit of Purwell Meadows and at Hillbrow in Letchworth.

I found the walk easy to follow and the paths mostly of good quality. Some of it is along roads, but fairly quiet or short stretches on busier road nearer the town's. The out of town off road parts mainly follow the Letchworth Greenway which is well maintained path and goes through some lovely countryside.
