10 Dec 2022After leaving the residential area of Heswall on the Deeside of the Wirral the route passes through flat fields to Barnston. The next section from Storeton Lane over Prenton Brook via leafy Barnston Dale to Thingwall is very pleasant and the Bassett Hound pub a handy place for food/drink. However the final third - past the enormous crematorium at Landican - is along a busy main road to the roundabout at Woodchurch. A dog friendly route with no difficult stiles.

05 Dec 2022The route left Heswall bus station along residential pavements to go along the wooded footpath edge of Whitfield Common, then crossed the road to a footpath tucked in next to a school. When we walk the route, the first diagonal field crossing had crops filling the field but it was easy enough to skirt round two sides. The fields were quite muddy though, the paths are obviously well used. A couple of stone stiles took us through the churchyard into Barnston village. (My friend’s Staffy managed all the stiles easily.)
The first bit of Storeton Lane had no pavement and there were quite a few cars, although they were considerately driven. After that there was a pavement, but it was very narrow, and it was good to leave the road onto a very nice wooded footpath.
This soon led to the very busy but paved A551 at Thingwall and a traffic-noisy tramp between a golf course and the crematorium (where both my parents ended their days), to the Arrowe Park roundabout.
Parts of this route were lovely, but it was let down by mud and a large proportion of roads (40%) which were not very pleasant.

20 Feb 2022Between two towns with good transport links and good pavements, there is a big chunk of countryside, often muddy, with gates and stiles which naturally excludes those using bicycles or wheelchairs, manual or motorised. That said, it is the best way of joining the two towns.
