Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

20 Aug 2022Henley to Twyford (Hentwy 1) review.
A Slow Way that follows the excellent Thames Path National Trail from Henley via Shiplake to Sonning, then loops back to a final walk into Twyford.
The Thames Path is a rough track in places and can get quite muddy and rutted.
The Baskerville pub in Shiplake closed suddenly (as of August 2022) but it is hoped new management can be found.
The route through Shiplake skips a loop of the Thames Path created in 2020. To enjoy this, turn left off Mill Road soon after the pub. You have to literally duck under the railway; the gap is that low!
Sonning has a choice of amenities. The Bull Inn by the church is nice.
The Slow Way heads back on the opposite river bank, following a narrow grassy path. This ends with a tight bend and a tarmacked lane into Charvil. See Reading to Twyford (Reatwy 1) for an alternative route through Charvil.
There is a pavement walk beside the A3032 into Twyford.

24 Jul 2022I walked this on a warm and slightly sunny summer afternoon, from Henley to Twyford.
It follows the Thames Path from Henley to Lower Shiplake, where it then continues to use the *older* route of the Thames Path to Shiplake, from where it then continues to Sonning Bridge, which you cross, and then you backtrack on the other side of the Thames to go to Charvil, from which you then walk along a busy road and, after crossing a really busy roundabout with no pedestrian crossing, you make it to Twyford.
The section south of where you leave the Thames is the least pleasant, but the rest is a lovely walk, albeit with some narrow sections. At the time of walking, Marsh Lock was not accessible as it's being refurbished, but I followed the Thames Path diversion that was well signed.

04 Jun 2022This route is for people who want to make an enjoyable outing and don't mind going the extra mile. Apart from the Twyford section of the route which leads along a busy road, it mainly follows the quiet Thameside Walk. It would be difficult to lose one's way as there are many "No public right of way", "Private property", "No access", "Keep out" signs next to it. There was a minor temporary diversion right before Henley which will probably be removed in the future. Otherwise, the route is well plotted. Even though the terrain is mostly flat, there are a few steps and narrow gates that would make it impossible for wheelers to follow it without help.
